Aman:
āRoshni⦠are you listening to me?ā
Roshni:
āHmā¦ā
Her voice was barely audible.
Aman:
āYou know today is our engagement, right?ā
Roshni (nervously):
āY-yesā¦ā
There was a pause.
Amanās tone turned seriousāfirm, controlled, yet gentle.
Aman:
āI know our parents have fixed this marriage.ā
āBut I need your answer.ā
āAre you happy with this engagement?ā
āDo you really want to marry me?ā
Silence. Complete silence.
Roshni held the phone tightly. Her throat felt dry.
Her heart raced.
She was scaredānot of Aman himself, but of the authority in his voiceā¦
the same authority her father carried.
Aman:
āRoshni⦠I need your answer.ā
Roshni (slowly):
āWe⦠we are getting ready for the engagementā¦ā
Aman:
āBut are you happy?ā
āIf you donāt want this, the engagement wonāt happen.ā
āIāll talk to your father.ā
Tears filled Roshniās eyes. š„ŗ
Roshni (honestly, breaking):
āNo⦠Iām not happy.ā
āBut Papa wants me to marry you.ā
āAnd heās right.ā
āI already made a huge mistake trusting a stranger.ā
āSo this time⦠I want to follow what my father says.ā
Her voice trembled.
Aman:
āSo that means⦠youāre okay with the marriage?ā
Roshni:
āHmā¦ā
Aman (stern):
āYouāre telling the truth, right?ā
āBecause after marriage, I wonāt tolerate drama.ā
Roshni closed her eyes.
Roshni:
āHmā¦ā
Aman:
āOkay.ā
āGet ready.ā
āIām coming.ā
The call disconnected.
Roshni wiped her tears. š
Roshni (thought):
Why did I say this?
I donāt love him.
How will I carry this relationship forward?
He has expectations⦠can I ever fulfill them?
How will this new journey even begin?

The Engagement
Aman arrived with his family. The Srivastava house was beautifully decorated.
Only close relatives were present. Soft music playedāsignaling the beginning of the ceremony.
Aman stood on the stage. His eyes were fixed on the staircase.
Waiting.
Searching.
And thenā
Roshni appeared.
Walking slowly with Sunita.
Amanās eyes softened instantly.
A smile bloomed on his faceāpure, unguarded happiness.
Roshni wore a simple golden lehenga.
Her hair flowed freely.
Minimal makeup.
Red lipsāquietly striking.
She looked breathtaking.
Sunita brought her to the stage and stepped back.
Roshni kept her gaze lowered.
Her heart pounded.
Aman couldnāt stop looking at her.
Her silence.
Her innocence.
Her vulnerability.
And those red lipsā¦
He lost himself for a moment.
Reva (teasing):
āAman⦠how long will you keep staring?ā
āPut the ring on her finger.ā
Aman snapped back to reality.
He stepped forward.
Roshni stood stillāexpressionless.
No smile.
No excitement.
Aman gently took her hand.
The moment his fingers touched her skinā
A sudden shiver ran through Roshni.
She looked up instinctively.
Their eyes met.
His gaze was intense⦠unreadable.
Aman slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then he leaned closer.
So close that only she could hear him.
Aman (whispering):
āI give you this ringā¦ā
āNot as a formalityā¦ā
āBut as a promise.ā
āTo love you⦠support youā¦ā
āToday, tomorrow⦠always.ā
āForever.ā
Goosebumps spread across Roshniās body.
Her breath hitched.
She lowered her eyes.
With trembling hands, she placed the ring on his finger.
Aman smiledāsatisfied, calm, certain.
Applause filled the room.
Ahana stepped forward with sweets.
Aman fed Roshni gently.
She took a small bite.
Then Roshni fed Aman.
He ate the entire piece.
Everyone laughed.
Sweety:
āMamu! You hate sweets!ā
āThen why did you eat all of it?ā
Aman smiled silently.
Everyone knew the answer.
On the Terrace
As conversations continued inside, Roshni quietly walked to the terrace.
Aman noticed.
He followed her. She stood alone, gripping the railing.
Aman stopped behind her.
Aman:
āRoshniā¦ā
She turned.
Adjusted her dupatta nervously.
They stood facing each other.
Silence stretched.
Aman watched every small movement.
Roshni gathered courage.
Roshni (softly, guilty):
āIām⦠sorry.ā
Aman looked at her, puzzled.
Roshni (tears forming):
āI hurt youā¦ā
āYou still saved me.ā
āI donāt even love you⦠yet youāā
Aman (interrupting gently):
āI know.ā
āI know you donāt love me.ā
He paused.
Then smiled faintly.
Aman:
āBut how do I explain this heartā¦ā
āThat wants only you?ā
āToday, the truth became official.ā
āOur engagement happened.ā
āSoon weāll be married.ā
āAnd youāll be mine⦠forever.ā
Roshniās heart raced.
Aman stepped closer.
So close that she could feel his presence.
He leaned in.
Aman (whispering, deep and husky):
āYouāll always be important to meā¦ā
āWhether you love me or not.ā
āI love you.ā
And before she could reactā
Before she could answerā
He walked away.
Leaving her frozen.
Her eyes widened.
Her mind went blank.
The function ended.
Guests left.
Aman left with his family.
He was satisfied.
Because nowā
Roshni would think of him.
Only him.
And nothing else.
